An order-change alert is not proof of a fulfillment hold
When an important detail changes on a paid order, it is tempting to treat the alert as “handled.” But detecting a change, deciding that it needs review and successfully holding fulfillment are separate steps. Your process should distinguish them.
Detection answers: what changed?
A recorded difference gives the reviewer something concrete to inspect. In Order Change Guard, the comparison uses observed order states. The first observed state becomes the baseline. It cannot establish an earlier payment-time state that the app never observed. Keep that limitation in mind when interpreting a before-and-after comparison.
Review answers: what needs checking?
Priority helps organize attention; it is not a guarantee about the final shipment. A changed postal code may need destination verification. A quantity or item change may require reconciliation with picking instructions. Use the actual order and your fulfillment process to decide what remains unresolved.
A hold answers: what happened to fulfillment?
Conditional holds depend on Shopify support and the relevant fulfillment state. Check the recorded result rather than inferring a hold from the existence of a conflict. An app cannot promise to block every shipment. Work already outside the relevant control point may need a separate operational response.
Approval has a specific scope
OCG approval releases only the app-owned holds it has recorded. It does not release every possible hold on an order, reverse an order edit or prove that every downstream system is ready. Read the result and keep other fulfillment controls in view.
Keep three facts in the handoff
For each reviewed change, make these facts easy to find: the recorded difference, the actual hold outcome and the review decision. If one is unknown, say so. A clear unknown is more useful than an assumption that fulfillment is blocked.
